Jesse moved to Nairobi in 2010 to start M-KOPA . He previously worked as Director of the GSMA Development Fund and Managing Director of Signal Point Partners. He holds an MBA from Oxford University (Skoll Scholar) and a BA from UNC Chapel Hill (Morehead Scholar).
Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder
Nick leads new product and new market activities for M-KOPA. Until 2009, Nick was Head of Global Payments at Vodafone Group, where he started M-PESA in 2004. Nick has PhD in Applied Science and an MBA from London Business School. He received an Economist Innovation Award in 2010.
Chief Credit Officer and Co-Founder
Chad previously served as the CFO of Mecene Investment, the fund manager of the Africap Microfinance Investment Fund in Johannesburg. Chad is a CFA charterholder and has an MBA with distinction from Oxford University, as well as 10 years investment banking experience at Bank of America.
Chief Commercial Officer
Yesse joined M-KOPA in 2016 having previously worked for telecommunications across East Africa and in DRC, including as MD of Celtel/Zain/Airtel Uganda. He has over 15 years senior management experience in highly performing mobile operators. Yesse has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Kenyatta University and a Masters in International Business Adminstration from United States International University
Chief Systems Officer
Pauline joined M-KOPA early 2012, bringing in rich experience in scaling up mobile innovation. She worked for 10 years at Safaricom, four of which were in the M-PESA Management team. She is Kenya born and passionate about bettering the lives of Kenyans. Pauline has a BSC in Civil Engineering from Cape Town University.
Chief Technology Officer
Jason has over 15 years experience building and operating large-scale, complex technology systems and products across public and private sectors. He previously worked as Chief Architect of M-Pesa at Vodafone Group.
Chief Operations Officer
Carl has over 20 years experience in Operations and Supply Chain having held various positions in North America, Europe and Asia. Prior to joining M-KOPA, Carl was the Corporate Vice President of Operations at Motorola. He holds a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois.
Samuel Gachwe Kariuki
Chief Human Resources Officer
Samuel joined M-KOPA in mid-2016 having previously worked for the African Development Bank, Safaricom and Citibank NA. He has over 12 years HR managerial experience having worked in various positions across the African continent. Samuel is an alumnus of Harvard Business School’s Program for Leadership Development, has an MBA from Strathmore Business School and currently pursuing a doctorate degree at the University of Liverpool.
Deputy CEO / Chief Finance Officer
James is a seasoned CEO / CFO with 25 years’ experience in the telecoms, infrastructure and technology sectors as well as board positions in Asia, US and Europe. Before M-KOPA he was previously CEO of Edotco Group, CFO of Axiata, CFO of Helios Towers Africa, and CFO of Vodafone (Central Europe & Africa), CFO of Celtel. James built and sold UbiNetics to CSR Plc.
Julian ‘Mitch’ Mitchell
Managing Director, M-KOPA Kenya
Mitch joined M-KOPA in 2015 having previously established a Consumer Finance Operation in Kenya. He has over 12 years Operational& Strategic experience with the British Forces. Mitch has a BSc (Hons) from Oxford Brookes University and an MSc from Cranfield University.
General Manager, M-KOPA Uganda
Anthony joined M-KOPA Uganda in March 2013 having worked in the microfinance sector in different capacities. Anthony holds a Bachelors degree from Makerere University and is an affiliate of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
General Manager, M-KOPA Tanzania
David joined M-KOPA in 2012 having previously worked as a corporate strategy consultant in telecom, as a senior manager with Engineers Without Borders Canada and as a co-founder at an online ethical shopping company. He has held several roles at M-KOPA. David has a B.Sc in Engineering and Entrepreneurship from the University of Calgary and an MBA from the University of Oxford (Skoll Scholar).
Director of External Affairs
Pauline joined M-KOPA in 2015 having previously been the CEO of Microfinance Bank. She has a wide range of leadership skills with over 18 years experience in both the legal and microfinance sectors. Pauline has a Bachelor of Laws degree, is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Certified Public Secretary.
Director of Technical Operations
Andreas joined M-KOPA in 2015 having previously worked in the Vodafone Group. He has worked on large scale projects like telco billing, VAC Systems and Google search integrations. Andreas has over 10 years experience in Architecture & Design and Operation & Management of large scale IT systems.
Director Market Development
Schroeder brings 10 years experience in Market Development and Sales to the team. Before joining M-KOPA in August 2012 he worked for Solio East Africa as General Manager – a startup working in Pay-As-You-Go solar based in Nairobi.
Nikhil joined M-KOPA in 2014 and is currently responsible for revenues at M-KOPA in E.Africa. He previously worked in India with SELCO Solar, a leading social enterprise working on off-grid solar. He hold a bachelors in Business from Christ University (Bangalore), and an MBA from the University of Oxford (Skoll Scholar).
General Counsel, Director of Compliance
Jesse is a dual-qualified lawyer admitted in New York and England & Wales with significant transactional and regulatory experience in both jurisdictions. Jesse previously worked in New York and London for Weil, Gotshal & Manges, a leading international law firm and was an Executive Director/Assistant General Counsel at JPMorgan where he counseled market leading businesses operating across the EMEA region. Prior to joining M-KOPA, Jesse worked for the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), one of the two principal financial regulatory authorities in the UK, where he gained significant financial services regulatory experience.
